Part 1
And now graduates, I have a gift for you. I’ve written a
poem to commemorate this day, and I have a copy for each of you to take home. I
put a picture of the Mt. Herman mascot on it, a blue heron. Note that the blue
heron is in flight; that means it is
actively pursuing a goal, aiming for the stars!

To Be Alive Is to
Learn
Learning, a lifelong experience, we do it every day.
We do it when we work and we do it when we play.
You decide what you want to do.
You set a goal that’s meant just for you.
And never say ‘can’t’, because you’ll find a way,
To achieve that goal, come what may.
Achieving goals helps us navigate through life,
Through the good times and through the times of strife
So open your minds, and try something new;
It may be just what you need to make it through
A rough time, with family, friends and advocates galore,
Cheering, urging you to aim for the stars and more.
Or it may be something you enjoy, something fun,
Like turning on music or sitting outside in the sun.
Life is yours for the taking, and what rewards you will
earn,
As you believe and achieve, for to be alive is to learn.

Congratulations,
class of 2013!
Note: The picture if the blue heron is from the website chesapeakebay.net. And
here’s a close-up of me and Mr. Cashen.
Ms. Bobby, not only did you look beautiful, your words were too! I am so glad I attended and was blessed to hear your commencement speech. Everything you said was both relevant and eloquent. I absolutely LOVE the Poem and am tucking it away for Corbin in a couple of years. I pray that God will continue to heal and bless you for ALL the lives you have touched!
